Fukushima: Second Worst Nuclear Disaster Ever

Japan’s nuclear power agency has raised the threat level from the Fukushima dis­as­ter to level 7, the high­est pos­si­ble level and tied with Chernobyl.

The amount of iodine-​​131 released is about 10% of that released in the Cher­nobyl dis­as­ter, accord­ing to authorities.

About two years ago, dur­ing the non-​​stop silli­ness of the GOP reac­tion to Sonia Sotomayor’s nom­i­na­tion, Nate Sil­ver pub­lished what he called a “thought exper­i­ment” in which he addressed whether Repub­li­cans could win the White House while con­tin­u­ing to lose ground nation­ally among His­pan­ics. Nate went on to pos­tu­late a rather tor­tured sce­nario in which this feat might be sta­tis­ti­cally pos­si­ble, pro­vided the GOP man­aged to “thread the nee­dle per­fectly,” pick­ing up key swing states to off­set losses in heav­ily His­panic areas. If they failed to do that, Nate felt their task would become “nearly impossible.”
