Beyond the Water’s Edge

Republican Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg

Editor’s Note: This article was originally scheduled to run on the morning of September 13. Because of the increased interest in the topic, its publication has been moved forward to the evening of September 12. As a result, we will not be running our usual Thursday morning article.

Politics stops at the water’s edge.
— Senator Arthur Hendrick Vandenberg

Arthur Vandenberg was the Republican Senator from Michigan from 1935 until his death in 1951. Senator Vandenberg was the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and worked with President Harry S Truman to create the United Nations. After World War II, when Vandenberg publicly changed his stance from isolationism to internationalism, he coined the famous maxim above.

Mitt Romney was born in Detroit in 1947 to a Michigan Republican political family. Romney’s father was the Governor of Michigan from 1963 to 1969 and his mother made a failed run at the Class 1 Senate seat once held by Vandenberg and now held by Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow.

Republicans used to actively participate in a muscular foreign policy in collaboration with Democratic Presidents and Congressmen. There were giants in the earth in those days. In a time before small-minded Republicans trumpeted small-minded ideas like the Agenda 21 conspiracy theory or the supposed imposition of Sharia law on U.S. communities, Republicans actually worked side-by-side with Democrats to bring to life Vandenberg’s maxim. Whatever differences we might have across the aisle in the halls of Congress were set aside so the United States could present a united foreign policy front.

Real estate underwater in Bangkok

There are terrible floods in Bangkok. The United Nations voted to end the military campaign in Libya. A Marine veteran of the Iraq war was wounded in the Occupy Oakland protest. The deficit supercommittee now has competing (hostile?) proposals. Rick Perry, realizing his limitations, may skip some debates. It turns out that the basic chemicals for life are made inside stars. The Copiale Cipher has been cracked, and an eighteenth century secret society had its secrets revealed.

Three Libyan Questions

19

The war in Libya appears to be over. Gaddafi’s régime has been completely destroyed, his army vanquished and his supporters fled or in hiding. The long-time despot’s body is currently a morbid tourist attraction pending an investigation into the circumstances of his death.

Given that, I’d like to make some observations and ask some questions of the readership here. (more…)

Another lively week has passed. Senate Republicans blocked a vote on whether to put teachers and police and firefighters to work. Libya’s dictator was killed, possibly by his own bodyguards. There was yet another Republican presidential debate. Herman Cain continues to rise in the polls, and now just beats Romney in the Real Clear Politics roundup. Occupy Wall Street still occupies Wall Street. The DJIA had a mixed week. Two earthquakes shook Berkeley within six hours. Lions and tigers and bears (oh, my!) were set loose in Ohio. Astronomers caught sight of the birth of a planet. Another dead satellite is falling. That’s just for starters.

CNN and other credible news sources are reporting that Colonel Moammar Gadhafi has been shot while running away from rebel forces. Clearly, this is breaking news and may change. Come here to discuss the current reports as they are updated through the day.

As I write this, the new Libyan government is in the process of systematically crushing the remaining resistance to its rule from Gaddafi’s few remaining supporters — a mix of fanatical adherents to his personality cult, and foreign mercenaries. The war is effectively over. It’s time for some analysis and retrospective. With the benefit of hindsight, things are much clearer, but I would have said basically the same things months ago.
